Makeup Monday with D'angelo Thompson: 3.24.14

Body Care
By: D'angelo Thompson

I'm forever drawn to new products and fresh ideas. Many months ago, a friend gave me a few yummy bars of soaps. I loved the yummy scents (lime cilantro, lemon and brown sugar), non-drying formulation and how environmentally friendly they are made (completely biodegradable).

Give your body a delicious treat from Freckles and Honey (, created by Bobby Flay's makeup artist, Dahlia Elaine Warner.

Sponsored Post - Family Fun & Giveaway with The Croods!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to make that animated movie you went to see with your family? Well, after spending a few days on the DreamWorks Animation campus learning more about The Croods, let me tell you – it’s a LOT more than you think!

The good folks over at 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation invited me and a crew of kick-ass bloggers to get an inside view of the movie making process and a chance to preview their next feature film The Croods. Not only did we get a chance to see the film before it hits theaters on March 22 (always a treat!), but we had exclusive insider access to the film’ s directors – Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, producers - Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell, as well as a number of storyboard artists, visual effects artists and even DreamWorks Animation’s CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg.

The most surprising element of animated film making is just how long the process actually takes. The Croods began production in 2007, but the concept for the film originated nearly 10 years ago! Just to give some perspective, several members of the production crew had babies at the start of filmmaking – and those kids were old enough to attend the premiere this year! If that weren’t enough, I learned that it can take an experienced animation artist, going at a great clip, a full day to create a single second of animation!

The true magic of animated filmmaking lies in the artists’ ability to create a visually believable world – one so rich in texture and detail that the line between the “real” and the animated worlds becomes blurred. A big piece of this impact comes from the technology used, and in many cases custom-built by DreamWorks to create the stunning visual effects that you see in The Croods. Much of this blurring of the lines comes from the strategic use of 3D technology. Rather than using 3D as a gimmick, with images floating in mid-air or shooting out at the audience, the effect adds an incredible layering and vibrancy to the backgrounds and textures of each scene. No wonder it takes so long to create!

While I consider myself to be a pretty good writer (they do let me keep posting on What The Flicka….), a picture is worth a thousand words. And a movie clip is worth even more! Here’s an inside look at the world of The Croods.

But wait - there's more! Not only can you enjoy the animated film with your family this weekend, but you can buy The Croods app today! The fun and visually stunning new mobile game by DreamWorks Animation and Rovio, the creators of Angry Birds. You can take a peek at the game here, and you can download The Croods Mobile Game for free for iOS and Android.

Holiday Traditions & Hickory Farms Giveaway!

What are your favorite holiday traditions?

Here at BadAssMama Central, we like to put up the Christmas tree the week after Thanksgiving, set up our Christmas villages and compare the past 6 years of Santa photos side-by-side to see how much the kids have grown (and laugh that Victor is STILL afraid of Santa...).

And whether it's as client gifts or treats for family and friends, Hickory Farms has been a classic holiday tradition that brings family and friends together for over 60 years. I remember looking forward to our annual visit to the local Hickory Farms store each Christmas (summer sausage and smoked cheddar still top my list!). Hickory Farms is very proud to be a part of those nostalgic moments and continues to focus on and celebrate its long heritage of tradition and authentic holiday memories.

To thank you for being a loyal BadAssMama fan, I have partnered with Hickory Farms to giveaway a fantastic Hickory Farms gourmet gift basket (a $25 value), featuring Hickory Farms':
  • Signature Beef Summer Sausages
  • Creamy Farmhouse Cheddar and Smoked Cheddar cheeses
  • Olive Oil & Rosemary Crackers
