Have you ever wondered what it takes to make that animated movie you went to see with your family? Well, after spending a few days on the DreamWorks Animation campus learning more about The Croods, let me tell you – it’s a LOT more than you think!
The good folks over at 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation invited me and a crew of kick-ass bloggers to get an inside view of the movie making process and a chance to preview their next feature film The Croods. Not only did we get a chance to see the film before it hits theaters on March 22 (always a treat!), but we had exclusive insider access to the film’ s directors – Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, producers - Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell, as well as a number of storyboard artists, visual effects artists and even DreamWorks Animation’s CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg.
The most surprising element of animated film making is just how long the process actually takes. The Croods began production in 2007, but the concept for the film originated nearly 10 years ago! Just to give some perspective, several members of the production crew had babies at the start of filmmaking – and those kids were old enough to attend the premiere this year! If that weren’t enough, I learned that it can take an experienced animation artist, going at a great clip, a full day to create a single second of animation!
The true magic of animated filmmaking lies in the artists’ ability to create a visually believable world – one so rich in texture and detail that the line between the “real” and the animated worlds becomes blurred. A big piece of this impact comes from the technology used, and in many cases custom-built by DreamWorks to create the stunning visual effects that you see in The Croods. Much of this blurring of the lines comes from the strategic use of 3D technology. Rather than using 3D as a gimmick, with images floating in mid-air or shooting out at the audience, the effect adds an incredible layering and vibrancy to the backgrounds and textures of each scene. No wonder it takes so long to create!
While I consider myself to be a pretty good writer (they do let me keep posting on What The Flicka….), a picture is worth a thousand words. And a movie clip is worth even more! Here’s an inside look at the world of The Croods.
